Help and advice for those caring for someone living with dementia

22 March 2023

Sign up to our April workshop now.

If you are looking after a loved one who is living with dementia, then come down to Cramond Residence on Saturday 22nd April. Our dementia care expert will be on hand to answer your questions and give practical advice and training. You’ll get a new perspective on the condition, and find out how to provide person-centred, compassionate care that will enhance the well-being of the person you’re responsible for.

“At Cramond Residence, we know what a responsibility it is to look after someone living with dementia,” says General Manager and dementia care expert, Ross Bijak. “That’s why I’ll be running this workshop to give people a bit of support, to provide more understanding about the condition and to offer some practical tips to make care more effective and less stressful.”

The workshop is part of Cramond Residences’ ongoing programme of opening its doors to the community to help enhance the way that later-life care is delivered and perceived. It will take place in Cramond Residence’s bespoke physiotherapy treatment room and last from 10am to 12 noon.

“The more people we’re able to help understand dementia, and how to interact and respond to the changing needs of those living with the condition, the quicker it’ll become more manageable and less of a taboo subject,” Ross explains.

The workshop will cover the basic facts of dementia, highlight the importance of person-centred care and show what this looks like through practical demonstrations. Ross will also show video footage in which people living with dementia describe their experiences.

“The workshop will be really interactive and those who attend will be able to take part in practical care exercises,” Ross explains. “These will look at the various care challenges that dementia can produce, including how best to communicate with the individual to reduce stress for all concerned.”

The numbers who can participate in the workshop will be kept small to make sure that everyone gets the most from the experience, so call to sign up, before all the spaces are filled. There is no charge.

Ross has more than 16 years of experience in the care sector and is well-versed in tailored dementia care. He undertook a Masters in Dementia Studies in 2020 to further his knowledge and leads Cramond Residence’s dementia care team.

Ross is currently working to further enhance Cramond Residence’s specialist dementia care by increasing staff training and introducing a range of sensory therapies to support residents with the condition.

“Our main focus at Cramond Residence is to change perceptions of dementia and ensure all of our residents live happy, independent and fulfilling lives by providinga host of tailored activities put on by our lifestyle co-ordinators. We also facilitate dementia support programmes and look to train all members of staff in dementia care – even those who may not be providing direct care – as well as offering support and coping techniques to help family and friends.”

So far, more than 93% of staff at the home have completed basic dementia training, helping them to optimise interactions with and support residents with dementia.
